Is my child too old for creative arts therapy, s/he isn’t creative?

Creative Arts and play therapy offer flexible means of helping a young person to find their own ways to work through their troubles. They don’t need to be creative, and talking during sessions is another way they may choose to approach therapy. Integrative holistic means that a blend of ways of helping your child to access therapy will be used. It is also important to remember that adolescents often need to revisit earlier developmental stages and so often appreciate the safe space to explore items on offer and have a chance to fulfil missed experiences.

What can I do if I am concerned about a young family with a child who is too young for therapy?

Theraplay is ideal for pregnant mums who may be in vulnerable circumstances, along with infants and toddlers. It is the therapy of choice for family work when there are risk factors which may prevent healthy attachment and bonding for the young child.

I’ve heard that you use video recording of sessions. What if I am uncomfortable with that?

The model of therapy that is recorded is Theraplay. The reason for this is to help parents/ caregivers and the therapist to reflect back in real time on the body language and interactions for the child/young person, to increase empathy and understanding of the child. There are strict security protocols in place for the storage and deleting of footage obtained. The decision to not give consent for video recording Theraplay sessions will not negatively impact on having therapy, but may impact on outcomes as reflecting on footage will not be possible.

Can therapy be covered by my insurance?

Some private insurance companies and employment services offer therapy for family members. It is worth checking with your provider. Get in touch if you want to discuss insurers where Safe Haven is registered.
