About Dena

My inspiration

As an individual

As an American-born dual national British citizen, I bring a unique blend of cultural perspectives and experiences to my role as a play therapist and trainee Theraplay Supervisor. Throughout my own childhood I connected with my inner world through creativity and play. As an adult, in my own therapy process, I rediscovered my capacity to use creativity for healing past wounds. This eventually lead to my choice of play therapy model, Integrative Holistic, because of its emphasis on all manner of creativity, imagination, and spiritual sense of awe and wonder.

As a parent

My journey with Theraplay began decades ago as an adoptive parent, seeking support to help our children bond with us. Witnessing the transformative effects of Theraplay first-hand ignited my passion for this approach and inspired me to delve deeper into its practice. Having experienced the Theraplay process as a parent, I possess a deep-rooted empathy for families at every stage of their journey. I understand the challenges they face and the importance of providing compassionate, personalized support. I created the innovative Feel-good Family Toolkit as a result of my experiences raising a family, living in challenging circumstances for many years.

As a therapist

During my long career in education, including roles as a teacher, SENCO, and Director of SEND, I found many children and young people in need of therapeutic approaches and began delivering group and family sessions within specialist and mainstream settings. Leaving education, I transitioned to therapeutic practice entirely. I certified in Theraplay, then qualified as a play therapist and have had an independent practice for some time. I advocate for the power of play in healing and connection, even delivering a TEDx Women talk on the subject.

As a supervisor

I feel fortunate to have learned from Phyllis Booth, co-creator of Theraplay, who continues to be my mentor and supervisor to this day. Her guidance and expertise have been instrumental in shaping my approach to Theraplay, deepening my understanding of its principles, and the role of supervision.  As a Theraplay supervisor trainee, I am committed to creating a safe, nurturing space where supervisees feel empowered to explore, learn, and grow. My approach is rooted in empathy, collaboration, and respect for each individual's unique strengths and challenges.
